Acrobat Ants

Characteristics

Size: Ranges from 1/8-inch to more than 1/4-inch in length. The most commonly encountered species are found at the smaller end of this size scale.  Color: Ranges from black to dark brown to red and black. The smaller species are typically uniformly dark in color. A larger species, common in Texas, is red and black.  Acrobat ants are identifiable by the heart shape of their abdomen when viewed from above.

Acrobat ants are like carpenter ants in that they prefer to nest in moist or rotted wood. Colonies are most often found in tree holes, dead limbs, stumps, and logs. Rotting areas in fences, decks, and railings may also be nesting locations.  Most infestations of acrobat ants originate from outdoor nests; however, if moist or rotted wood exists inside due to water leaks, this ant will readily nest indoors. Such interior nests are typically found around the perimeter -- in soffits, door frames, and skylights.

Control

Management of Acrobat Ants is best accomplished by locating and eliminating the colonies found in or around the structure. Colonies living in the soil or under items such as stones or logs should be treated by drenching mound or colony with a residual insecticide such as Termidor SC  or Tempo.

Advance Ant Bait for Small Ants

If you are not sure where they are in the wall, or if you think that they may just be coming in from the outside, then try a non repellent insecticide and/or a  bait on the interior.  Baits such as Advance Carpenter Ant Bait, , Advance Ant Bait for Small Ants, or Maxforce Complete  can be applied to areas where ants are foraging.  Ant Cafe's can also be used to hold and protect your bait on the inside.

Alpine Ant & Termite FoamNon-repellent insecticides such as Phantom, Alpine Foam, or Premise foam will also work well inside.  These powerful non-repellent ingredients will allow pests to forage right over it and then spread it to other insects hidden behind walls or in their home colony, killing every other pest they come in contact with.  These products are virtually odorless, clear in color and provides superior pest control with a long-lasting residual.

Delta Dust

If you know with some certainty where the colony is living inside, then you can treat it directly (or as close as possible) with a non-repellent insecticide, a dust or a foam.  Dusts include Delta Dust, Drione, or Borid Turbo

Use the Crusader or B&G Bulb Duster to apply your dusts or baits intoWhite Crusader Duster those tight spots or hard to reach places.

Note:  Use only one bulb duster for each formulation.  You don't want to contaminate your bait with an insecticide.

For added control on the exterior, use a hand held spreader to apply a pesticide granular product such as Talstar Granular.   Using this product will allow you to get complete coverage to hard to reach ground areas, and in mulch or rock areas that liquids may not reach.  It is a sand-like granular that will filter down into those areas where ants are likely to be harboring.

Regular inspections and service are necessary to find and treat new colonies as they move in from neighboring properties. These perimeter treatments can keep your home or business pest free. We suggest a regular treatment on the exterior with Demand, Tempo, or Suspend.

General tips for limiting ant infestations include:

  • Eliminate piles of lumber, bricks, or other debris that could serve as a nesting site for ants.

  • Keep landscape mulch less than 2 inches thick and at least 12 inches away from foundations.

  • Ensure the sprinkler system does not spray directly onto the foundation.

  • Seal as many cracks in the building's exterior as possible.

  • Keep tree and shrub branches cut away from touching the building (especially trees from a neighboring property that may have an infestation)

  • Consider re-landscaping to avoid using plants that are prone to aphids and similar insects. At the very least, treat such plants for aphids regularly.
