Size: Up to 2 inches long. Color: Reddish brown. The American cockroach
is the largest cockroach that infests buildings in the United States. This
insect may be recognized by a yellow "figure-8" pattern on the shield at the
front of its body. In Florida, the American cockroach is called the
"palmetto bug," and it has the nickname "water bug" throughout the United
States.
Like all cockroaches, it is omnivorous and will eat virtually anything people
will and many things we won't. This cockroach thrives in warm, damp
environments, such as sewers, steam tunnels, basements, crawl spaces, and boiler
rooms. In southern states, it will also be found living and breeding outdoors.
Niban Bait is one of the more popular products for treating
Silverfish and Oriental
Roaches.
Niban has no known resistance, won't degrade in heat or
sunlight and lasts through up to 4" of rain. Niban controls
cockroaches, crickets, silverfish and various
occasional invaders. Designed for both interior and
exterior use, NIBAN Granular Bait is environmentally
sensitive and virtually odorless, making it well suited
for use in and around homes, apartments, schools, hotels,
restaurants, supermarkets, food processing plants and other
sensitive accounts.
For a more traditional approach, treat the outside with a residual liquid such as Demand,
Tempo or Suspend. Be
sure to treat a six foot swath all the way around the house and one foot up the
foundation wall. You should also spray all the potential entry points into the
house such as windows, doors, vents, plumbing, etc. Spraying the roach harborage
areas such as water meters, under mulch, black plastic, holes or cracks in cinder block walls,
retainer walls or hollow trees will also help. For added control, apply an
insecticide granule such as Talstar.
For additional control, or a non-poisonous approach to capturing American
Roaches, use Victor Pheromone Traps or
Trapper Max Glueboards. Both of these sticky
traps work great when strategically placed throughout the home or garage.
Treat the inside with Delta Dust,
Borid Turbo, or Drione.
These products can be applied to cracks and crevices where these insects hide.
Be sure to pay attention to plumbing areas, wall voids, and under cabinets. Pay
special attention to any areas of your home where there is water. This includes
the refrigerator, air conditioner, dishwasher, laundry room and all of the
plumbing.
