Cluster Fly

Characteristics

Size: Medium-sized flies from 1/4-inch to 3/8-inch in length. Color: Black.  The cluster fly is a little larger than the common housefly and moves sluggishly. It can be recognized by the short, golden colored hairs on its thorax, the part of the body to which the legs and wings are attached.  They fold their wings flat over their abdomen when at rest.

Habitat and Behavior

Remember that scene in The Amityville Horror? Some demonic spirit had something to do with all those flies just suddenly appearing in the upstairs bedroom, right? Nope... just a bunch of cluster flies coming out thinking its a warm spring day.

A number of insects have discovered that heated buildings are ideal for surviving the cold of winter. Such pests include box elder bugs, cluster flies, and ladybugs. As the weather cools in late summer and early fall, the sun warms the southern and western walls of buildings. The warmth attracts these insects to buildings where they crawl inside cracks and stay there for the winter. This would be fine, but during warm winter days, some insects "wake up" and end up on the inside of the building.

Cluster flies are actually parasites of earthworms. The adult flies deposit their eggs in the soil and the larvae seek out and live off of earthworms.  Cluster flies begin to look for overwintering spots in late August through October.  As daytime temperatures begin to drop, the flies will be attracted to warm walls of buildings.  The walls on the south and west sides are the ones usually affected because the late summer sun shines most on these sides.

Once they are on the building, the flies crawl into cracks in the exterior- crawling as far back as they can go.  As the number of flies attracted to the building increases, large "clusters" of flies will huddle inside wall voids, attics, and false ceilings.

Control

The best and most effective method for controlling cluster flies in buildings is to prevent them from entering the building in the first place.

Cluster fly infestations can be prevented or limited if treatment is made prior to the flies seeking overwintering sites.  The time of year in which preventative applications should be made varies depending on the area of the country.  A good rule of thumb is to make preventative applications beginning in mid to late August in northern states and late September to early October in southern states.

On the exterior, surfaces and areas where cluster flies land can be treated with a residual insecticide such as Demand, Suspend, or Tempo.  Pay special attention to those south and west sides of the buildings.

Apply a dust such as Drione or Delta Dust to cracks or voids that you suspect may be harboring a dead rodent, animal carcass, or any other form of moist organic material.

For a quick knockdown of adult flies on the interior as well as the exterior, try CB-80 Pyrethrum.
