Fruit Flies

Characteristics

Adults are about 1/8 inch long and usually have red eyes.

The front portion of the body is tan and the rear portion is black. Fruit flies lay their eggs near the surface of fermenting foods or other moist, organic materials.

Habitat and Behavior

If you have been seeing small flies or gnats in your kitchen, they're probably fruit flies. Fruit flies can be a problem year round, but are especially common during late summer/fall because they are attracted to ripened or fermenting fruits and vegetables.

Tomatoes, melons, squash, grapes and other perishable items brought in from the garden are often the cause of an infestation developing indoors. Fruit flies are also attracted to rotting bananas, potatoes, onions and other unrefrigerated produce purchased at the grocery store. They also infest fruity liqueurs in bars and restaurants, as well as the drains and sinks.

Control

As with all species of flies, the first method of control is through sanitation. Wet organic material on which flies can lay their eggs must be removed, destroyed, therefore eliminating any future breeding sources. Killing adult flies will reduce infestation, but elimination of breeding areas is necessary for good management.

Fruit Fly Traps-

Sanitation-

For drains that have a lot of gunk and organic material on the sides of them, try Vector Bio 5 Drain Cleaner. This will eliminate any breeding sources in drains.

Insecticide Control-

For an immediate knockdown of adult fruit flies, try CB-80 Pyrethrum, or 565.

Gentrol is also a great product for controlling fruit flies. Gentrol is an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) that provides preventative action, since it disrupts the pests' normal development. Hydroprene, the active ingredient, prevents the pest from developing and thus reproducing.

In areas where you have more freedom to make spot treatments or broader surface treatments, try a residual insecticide such as Tempo SC or Suspend.

For application equipment, you may need the B & G sprayer, the Bugwieser, or the Hudson Sprayer.
