Hobo Spider

Characteristics

Size: May measure up to one inch in length with a leg span up to two inches.  Color: Brownish gray with a number of various markings.

Habitat and Behavior

The Hobo or the Aggressive House Spider is a  funnel-web spider, meaning they construct flat webs which have a funnel shaped retreat at one end. The females spend most of their lives in the webs, while the males and immature spiders may wander about in search of females or better nesting sites. It is usually these males or young spiders that are seen by homeowners. Unlike the hobo spider, which resembles this spider, the domestic house spider does not have a dangerous bite.

The Aggressive house spider is found from central and northern California up through the Pacific Northwest in Washington, Idaho and Oregon. This species prefers to build its webs where a hole or crack exists in which it can locate its funnel retreat. Such webs are usually found in basements, crawl spaces, garages and outdoors in vegetation.

Control

Mechanical control measures can be very effective for immediate and long term control.  What we mean by "mechanical control" is simply locating spiders and webs and physically destroying them.  Use the Webster for brushing out spiders and their webs.  By regularly removing old webbing, you can easily determine new activity, and it also removes their food sources in the webs making their environment uninhabitable.

Treat with a residual insecticide such as Talstar, Tempo, or Suspend, around the foundation of the structure, window frames, door frames, soffit areas, vent openings, exhaust areas, garages, basements, mounted lights, air conditioning areas, cable entry points, deck areas, stoop and patio areas.

Using DRIONE DUST, or DELTA DUST in the attic area would be a good measure if there is an infestation in that area. Or you can apply Delta Dust to your crawl space, as it is moisture proof.

Dusting is useful if there are voids such as electric outlets, switch plate covers or vent areas where spiders are emerging. Using a duster like the White Crusader, would allow for easier dusting.

In addition to sanitation measures, utilize the incorporation of glue board spider traps for the capture and elimination of foraging spiders.  Trapper Max Glue Boards are sold in packages of 50.  Set them out in dark areas where spiders might be hiding or foraging.  Maintaining sticky traps behind furniture, to either side of exterior doors, and in the garage is an excellent way to intercept most spiders as they enter.

Tips for Control

The key for controlling the aggressive house spider is to look for webs and remove them, making sure a treatment is applied into any crack associated with a web to be sure the spider has been killed.

Steps that should be taken to prevent new spiders from entering include:

  • Removing or limiting heavy, ground-covering vegetation near the building.
  • Sealing cracks and holes in the building s exterior.
  • Installing tight-fitting screens on all attic and foundation vents.
  • Sealing holes around pipes indoors to prevent spiders from entering the
  • living spaces of the home by following plumbing lines in basements and crawl spaces.

If a home has experienced Hobo spiders, the occupants can reduce the chances of bites by following the recommendations below:

  • Clothing can be stored in sealed plastic bags inside drawers or inside
  • plastic storage compartments hanging in closets.
  • Shoes should be stored inside plastic shoeboxes.
  • Clothes that have been left on the floor, in a clothing basket, or are otherwise exposed should always be shaken well and inspected before putting them on.
  • Avoid keeping clothing on floors.
  • Beds should be moved out so they do not touch walls or curtains.
  • Bed skirts around the box springs should be removed from beds, and bedspreads that come near or touch the floor should not be used.  These items allow spiders easy access to climb onto the bed.
  • Persons living in infested homes should get into the habit of inspecting bedding prior to climbing in.

The effects of hobo spider bites are similar to those of the brown recluse spider. The actual bite is not always painful, but a small, hard area typically appears within 30 minutes, surrounded by an expanding red welt that may reach 5-15 cm in diameter.

Blisters form within 15-35 hours, which eventually crust over the cratered wound. A scab can develop over necrotic tissue that eventually sloughs off. In some cases, tissue loss is so severe that surgical removal of damaged tissue and repair are needed. The fully developed lesion may reach 3 cm or more in diameter. Lesions may take several months to heal, and frequently leave a permanent scar.

The occurrence of systemic illness is variable. However, the most common symptom is a severe headache, sometimes occurring within 10 hours (sometimes ~30 minutes) that does not respond to aspirin. The headaches have been compared to migraines and may persist for a week, sometimes accompanied by nausea, weakness, fatigue, temporary loss of memory, and vision impairment. No deaths due to T. agrestis bites have been reported.
