Thief Ants

Characteristics

Size: One of the smallest ants found infesting buildings, measuring less than 1/16-inch in length.

Color: Golden-yellow

Because of the thief ant's size and color, it is often confused with the pharaoh ant which is a bit larger. Thief ants have only 10 segments in their antenna and the antennae end in a two-segmented club. Pharaoh ants have 12 antennal segments and a three-segmented club.

Habitat and Behavior

This ant will nest in soil, in wood, in voids, and in just about any suitable location. Finding the nests is extremely difficult.

Thief Ants derive their name from their habit of locating their colonies close to those of other ants to steal that ant's food and even capture and eat the other ant's eggs and larvae. Colonies are usually small and are difficult to find. In homes, trails are often seen in bathrooms and kitchens and in and around windows where the ants can find moisture and food.

Control

Management of Thief Ants is best accomplished by locating and eliminating the colonies found in or around the structure. Colonies living in the soil or under items such as stones or logs should be treated by drenching mound or colony with a residual insecticide using Tempo, Demand, or Suspend.

If you know with some certainty where the colony is living inside the structure, then you can treat it directly by dusting the nest with a products such as Delta Dust, Drione, or Borid Turbo.

If the colony cannot be located, sweet baits such as, Maxforce Gel, or Gourmet Ant Bait Gel, can be applied to areas where ants are foraging.   Other granual baits such as Maxforce Granual, and Advance Carpenter Ant Bait Granual should also be considered. When baiting for thief ants, eliminating competing food sources such as crumbs and spills is very important.

Use the B&G Bulb Duster to assist in your granular or dust application

The use of indoor bait stations such as the ANT CAFE'S will preserve and protect baits.

Use the Crusader to apply your granual baits to those hard to reach areas, cracks, crevices, or voids.
